Medical Tourism and Insurance

Medical Tourism and Insurance

The primary motive of medical tourism is to save costs of the required medical procedures. The most sought after medical procedures and treatments by travelers involve cheap plastic surgeries like breast augmentation, breast implants, tummy tuck, face lift, liposuction and abdominoplasty, to more serious life saving treatments like hip & knee replacement, heart surgeries and other treatments.

Medical tourism operators assist clients in getting access to safe and cost effective medical treatments at hospitals at par with the best in the world. However, as with any procedure, these treatments too involve risk of complications, which could jeopardize the whole motive of medical tourism.

In order to distance yourself from such repercussions it is advisable to obtain an appropriate insurance cover for planned medical tourism procedure.

Insurance for medical travelers is a rapidly growing phenomenon within the tourism industry. Innumerable medical travel insurance plans and products are being introduced in the market to lure people travelling abroad for treatments.

If the surgery or the treatment is planned as a part of travel, standard or routine travel insurance policies don’t provide cover for such medical procedures abroad. So, even if you have annual standard travel insurance and need a treatment or operation abroad, you’ll still have to buy a special medical insurance cover plan as standard policies provide cover for emergency procedures only.

Furthermore, insurance is a complex subject matter which is subject to many laws, regulations and limitations. Different countries have different insurance laws and regulations. It is also observed that insurance laws are also not uniform within the same country due to the prevailing political & economic scenario.

Insurance laws are subject to change as per the country you reside in, the country you are approaching for treatment and the country insurance providing company is belongs to. In spite of rise in demand for medical tourism and cheap plastic surgeries abroad, only a few countries have made amendments in their laws and insurance regulations for medical travels. There is no case law that settles the uncertainties involved in medical tourism insurance. However, you must check the following points before buying a medical travel policy:

•    The insurance provides cover for the country you live in.
•    The insurance provides cover for the country you plan to go for treatment.
•    The insurance provides cover for hospital and medical treatment you are being treated for.

There are several companies who claim to provide policies for the medical tourism industry. You should be doubly sure before making a purchase to ensure your best interests.
