Bali backs health tourism

The DPRD Bali with the local provincial government has prepared a special budget to implement an international standard hospital by 2013. It is hoped that the Bali Provincial Hospital will attract more health tourists to the island for cut price, international standard medical procedures during their vacations.

The Treasurer of Commission IV DPRD Bali, I Wayan Rawan Atmaja, stated that in 2012 Rp. 116.4 billion had been earmarked for this development. “We plan to have in 2013 an international standard hospital operating with a capacity of 200 beds. The hospital’s main area of expertise will be heart conditions and strokes,” explained Atmaja.

The hospital is slated to be built on Jl. By Pass Sanur, with the construction to be handled by a third party development company and the management entirely in the hands of the Provincial Government of Bali.

Plans for the facility are now at the Engineering Detailed Design (DED) phase, and will be completed by the end of May.

The Bali Provincial Hospital Development will be an important part of health tourism for Bali, as stated the Minister of Tourism Mari Elka Pangestu in Nusa Dua on Saturday last week. According to Pangestu, health tourism is one of seven priority developments for tourism in Indonesia to support and enhance tourist arrivals.

Elka added health tourism has now become a common thing for people from various countries around the world. To that end, it is hoped that Indonesia and Bali in particular can capitalise upon the growing number of health tourists.
