Kerala’s ayurvedic industry believes that its counterparts in Sri Lanka are becoming a major threat to its dominance in the industry, a media report said.

Kerala’s ayurvedic industry challenged by Sri Lanka

“Sri Lanka has slowly come up as a threat to our market,” Sanjeev Kurup V., Secretary of the influential Kerala Travel Mart Society who also runs the Paithrukam Hospitality Group has told Indian media.

“I was in Sri Lanka only last week, and I estimate they have taken away 30-40 percent of our business,” Kurup has told IANS.

According to him, weakness of Sri Lanka’s rupee compared to the Indian rupee and also the end of the three decade old conflict in the Island has helped the country’s Ayurvedic industry.

According to him, another reason for the growth is that in Sri Lanka many clinics allow men to provide ayurvedic massage to women.

“Well, ladies from countries like Germany, even if they are 45 years of age or more, are pretty strong physically, and they somehow don’t seem happy with our women,” he has said

However, Indian tourism officials believe that Sri Lanka, even though making grounds in the Ayurveda industry, it will not be at the expense of Kerala’s industry.

“Our ayurveda is so unique. And there is enough space in ayurveda business for more players to get in”, Suman Billa, Secretary in Kerala Tourism, has told the IANS.

According to the media report, ayurveda plays a key role in attracting close to one million foreign and over one crore domestic tourists every year to Kerala.

Almost 70 percent of the foreigners and 30-40 percent of Indian tourists come to Kerala for ayurvedic treatment and the average stay of a foreigner in Kerala is 18 days – one of the highest in the world.

Ayurveda helps Kerala emerge as a key medical tourism hub

Thiruvananthapuram, India :

The centuries-old tradition of Ayurveda is fast turning Kerala into a global medical tourism destination, attracting holidayers as well as international celebrities to the State.

When British super model Naomi Campbell landed in Kerala last year for an ayurvedic massage session at Leela Kovalam Beach hotel, she was only affirming the efficacy of the Indian healing system with God’s Own Country as its torch-bearer in modern times.

CELEBRITY VISITORS

According to sources in Kerala Tourism department, those who visited the State in recent times included Italian film director Bernardo Bertolucci, known for his global hits such as Last Tango in Paris and The Last Emperor, who came to the State for ayurvedic treatment for a nagging ailment.

German TV and film actress Ingeborg Schoener (77) has been trooping into the state for the last eight years for Ayurveda treatment.

Completely cured of her painful knee problem, she told tourism officials that she had stopped allopathic treatments.

“Thanks to Ayurveda, I feel fantastic. I make ghee at home and have stopped using oil to fry food. I do my yoga, drink a glass of hot water first thing in the morning and buy ayurvedic medicines for a whole year,” a spokesperson for the department quoted her as saying.

Pop star Madonna, Hollywood actress Demi Moore and Cherie Blair, wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, have also used Ayurveda.

Back home, former Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee is an ardent believer in the healing properties of Ayurveda’s Panchakarma therapy.

After his visit to Kumarakom resort, from where he famously “mused” on the state of the affair of the nation in 2000, Vajpayee told people around him that he felt very relaxed after Ayurveda therapy in Kerala.

The list of celebrities from the showbiz world, sports and politics, fascinated by Ayurveda’s power to rejuvenate, detoxify and cure, is a never ending one.

TRADITIONAL FORM

“Ayurveda, practised in Kerala in its traditional and authentic form, has been a major attraction for tourists. We are now planning to leverage its healing and curative aspects, along with its wellness system, to woo tourists during the monsoon season”, Kerala Tourism Secretary Suman Billa told PTI.

“It can help Kerala become a 365-day destination and ensure repeat visits,” Billa said.

WIDE RANGE

From autism to Alzheimer’s, from migraine to diabetes, from sexual disability to slip disc, there is not a single problem that Ayurveda does not have an answer for.

K.B. Bhadran, DGM, Quality Assurance Department, Santhigiri Ashram, said “We are sticking to the traditional form of Aurveda. We are not acting as a massage parlour but as a genuine healthcare provider round the year with wellness and recreation only a part of it.

In view of the growing fascination for Ayurveda, the private sector has entered in the wellness sector in a big way, as is evident from the number of spas, hotels and resorts coming up in Kerala.

Pankajakasthuri, Kottakkal, Kairali, Shanthigiri and Vaidyaratnam are among the major private players in the Ayurveda sector.

CLASSIFICATIONS

Kerala Tourism has introduced the “Green Leaf” and “Olive Leaf” grading for Ayurvedic institutions in order to ensure quality service.

“Green Leaf is given to those ayurvedic centres which provide ‘five star’ facilities while Olive Leaf is for the ‘three star’ category. These classifications ensure the credibility of service providers and the quality. It will help tourists to identify appropriate centres for their requirements,” says Billa.

According to State Tourism Director Rani George, Ayurveda has resulted in the average stay back period of tourists in Kerala going up from 14. 1 to 18 days now, the highest in the country.

Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of the : Health & Wellness Tourism to Boost Employment and Incomes Across the Country

Bogotá, DC :

The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Tourism, through the Productive Transformation Program (PTP), launched the business plan for the wellness tourism sector, an area in which Colombia stands to become a regional leader.

The strategy plans to create 10,000 jobs and revenue of USD 450.6 million by 2032.

This was stated by the Minister of Trade, Industry, and Tourism, Sergio Diaz-Granados, who explained that with this new roadmap, the country seeks to strengthen its offer in the field of Thalassotherapy, which is a form of hydrotherapy, and the creation of first class spas and wellness centers. All, of which, will be “framed by the natural and cultural richness that characterizes Colombia,” said the Minister.

The projections for this activity show that there will be a substantial increase in revenue, which will move from the USD 4.3 million that was recorded in 2012 to that of USD 450.6 million by 2032. Moreover, it foresees the creation of 10,378 direct and indirect jobs during the same period.

“Within Colombia’s tourism strategy, this wellness offer represents an attractive addition to health, business, and nature tourism,” said the Minister. He added that the aim is to transform hydrotherapy into a standardized product, to ensure quality control and a focus on preventative care.

Currently, wellness tourism represents 1% of the total visitors to Colombia, and the objective of the business plan, which was presented yesterday, is to increase this to 2.15% by 2032.

Meanwhile, the Manager of the PTP, Juan Carlos Garavito, said: “Wellness tourism will become an engine of social, environmental, and economic development in various regions of the country…”

In his view, this business plan will tap the supply of living traditions, which include many indigenous rituals and practices with medicinal plants.

The wellness tourism strategy will be extended nationwide and will provide advertising, marketing, planning, and support to the regions. This will facilitate implementation and the attraction of both domestic and foreign investors. The regions, on the other hand, must concentrate their efforts on developing an attractive tourism offer.

The key items that comprise wellness tourism are thalassotherapy, hot springs and spas, and wellness centers. The sector’s business plan is based on three pillars of sustainable development: the environment, employment, and the economy.

Minister Diaz-Granados said that USD 642 million in investment is necessary for the creation of 216 new wellness centers by 2032. This will include 10 thermal centers, 2 thalassotherapy centers, and 200 wellness centers and spas. “The PTP, Proexport, and the private sector will participate in the 32 actions that are covered in the business plan for the wellness tourism sector, so as to achieve the proposed objectives,” he said.
