Medical Tourism and Hair Transplants

Many people from developed nations are taking advantage of medical tourism. First world countries charge massive sums of money for medical treatment and this is why many needy patients are looking at ways of locating good treatment at a lower cost. People who leave their home country to receive treatment including surgery or specialist treatment for diseases are referred to as “medical tourists”. The majority of people who travel for such purposes reside in developed nations such as the USA or other European countries and head off to an under developed nation that offers good medical care for less money.

Some people view this exercise as money saving whilst others find that the medical procedure they require is only carried out in other countries. Those who travel for medical purposes seek many types of treatment including cardiac surgery, knee or hip replacement, aesthetic surgery or dental treatment. The majority of countries that welcome medical tourists offer many medical procedures performed with a high level of skill and offered at a much, much lower price.

Some people frown upon the idea of traveling in order to receive medical care, they feel that the practice impacts on the general standards of care that are available to the middle classes within that country, yet cosmetic surgery can be a profitable venture. Medical tourists are flocking to countries such as Brazil and Israel where they are able to access affordable plastic surgery. Many foreign countries are well known for carrying out plastic surgery and breast implants although hair transplant surgery has recently become quite popular. There are numerous countries that offer expert hair transplant surgery.

One of those countries is Canada.

Canadian surgeons seem to excel in hair transplantation. Canada is much like the USA, but the country offers cheaper medical procedures and noticeably cheaper cosmetic surgery. European males are willing to travel to have a hair surgery transplant, as are males from the USA, Africa and The Middle East. A hair transplant can be great for males and females who are going bald due to natural causes or illness. Hair transplant surgery may be the only alternative for many conditions that cause hair loss.

Some of the best transplant surgeons in Canada use the laser slit technique. This new and innovative procedure involves transplanting hair follicles from one part of the body to another, allowing hair to re- grow in a very natural way. Canada has a good record for this type of surgery and the results of the transplant are speedy. Skilled cosmetic surgeons are adept at this procedure, and the surgery doesn’t take long to carry out. Patients recovers in a very short space of time. Naturally this saves the patient a lot of time and money.

Because the Canadian surgeons have perfected the art of transplanting hair they are now able to offer their clients far better value for money. Of course good news soon spreads hence many are thinking of going to Canada for hair transplantation surgery. The country has proven strengths in this field and overall it has impacted on the nation’s economy, so one could say that everyone is a winner.

Thailand: Medical hub for Nepalis

NepalCT13mar2013

Bangkok :

The number of Nepali medical tourists visiting Thailand has increased in recent days. The first class hospitals, high class medical technology, top-class physicians and significantly lower treatment costs have attracted many Nepali medical tourists.

Thailand has also developed itself as the most important and popular medical hub in Asia and worldwide. Thai medical services are renowned worldwide, resulting in a rapid growth in related industries such as spa, Thai massage, Thai herbs, serviced apartments and health tourism.

Some of the renowned people who took advantage of the Thailand medical facilities are former queen Komal, Sita Dahal (wife of Pushpa Kamal Dahal —president of CPN-Maoist) among others. It is also a well-known fact that when former late prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala needed medical care in 2006, he chose to travel to Bangkok’s Bumrungrad Hospital for treatment. At present, former crown prince Paras is also undergoing treatment at Samitivej Hospital.

Western accreditation is also a vital component for confidence in undergoing foreign medical treatments and Bangkok’s Bumrungrad and Samitivej hospitals were among Southeast Asia’s first recipients of the United States’ prestigious Joint Commission International (JCI) certification.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), 25,728 Nepalis have visited the country in the year 2011. The Thai Embassy Nepal said that they do not have record regarding the medical patients but a significant number visit for medical treatment.

Bumrungrad International Hospital is the main medical tourism hospital in Thailand and one of the biggest in the world. The hospital is state-of-the-art, equipped with top-of-the-line technology and has well-trained staff. Annually, Bumrungrad serves more than 420,000 international patients from over 190 countries.

Kenneth Mays, Hospital Market Director at Bumrungrad Hospital, said that the hospital records around 2,000 Nepali patients annually especially for treating cardiovascular disease, cancer, digestive cancer, neurology and plastic surgery among others.

The cost of medical treatments in Thailand is significantly lower compared to identical treatment in the West and other developed parts of the world. So, many medical tourists from developing countries can also afford it, said the market director.

Bumrungrad is the first Asian hospital accredited by the US-based Joint Commission International in 2002, and 15 hospitals are now accredited in Thailand.

“Thailand’s high standards and healthcare expertise make it a world leader in medical tourism,” said Mays. He said Thailand’s medical professionals are highly qualified. The physicians, surgeons and nurses have been trained to the highest levels, while many specialists have been conducting research and gaining experience at the world’s best medical institutes.

According to TAT, 1.4 million international patients have received medical treatment in Thailand and the number is increasing annually. Statistics show that medical tourism has been a growing segment of Thailand’s tourism and health-care sectors in the past years.

Medical tourism in Thailand is growing at a yearly rate of 16 per cent, while in financial terms the foreign medical services sector is expected to make a whopping 100 billion baht by 2015. Currently, medical tourism makes up 0.4 per cent of the GDP, while tourism overall accounts for six to seven per cent, the third most important economic driver in Thailand.

TAT began promoting medical tourism in 2004, has a detailed medical tourism website that highlights many of the most popular treatments available, including dental work, dermatology and cosmetic surgery, as well as listing reputed hospitals, making it easy for potential visitors to decide on a procedure.

SmartCare Worldwide Launches Medical Travel Benefit Program for Employers

smartcareCT07mar2013

Smart Care  Worldwide, a Houston-based medical travel facilitator, has launched a comprehensive medical travel benefits program that is available to all U.S. employers. The new medical travel program will cut overall healthcare costs and provide employers a meaningful give-back benefit for their employees.

Houston, TX (PRWEB)

The first to implement SmartCare’s new medical travel benefit program , offering its employees medical travel benefits through their underlying group medical plans, is a U.S. subsidiary of a South African global employer with diversified energy and chemical operations in 38 countries. The plan is administered by SmartCare Worldwide (http://www.SmartCareWorldwide.com).

SmartCare’s medical travel benefit offers employees access to a comprehensive network of medical services , dental services, hospitals and top medical professionals in Costa Rica–a country recognized for its affordable, high-quality medical and dental healthcare as well as its geographic beauty.

According to Rick Huntington , a principal with SmartCare Worldwide, “medical tourists having procedures in Costa Rica enjoy significant cost savings as great as 70 percent less than U.S. costs. These substantial savings are of central importance to employers who are under increasing pressure to contain medical insurance costs while providing health benefit options to their employees.”

For participating employers and their employees, SmartCare’s medical travel plan  provides access to high quality, affordable dental, medical and surgical services, ranging from routine to major procedures both elective and non-elective. All physicians, specialists, surgeons, dentists and related medical providers in SmartCare’s system are carefully vetted, accredited by specialty, and affiliated with Costa Rica’s leading Joint Commission International  -accredited hospitals. SmartCare Worldwide has developed a structured program to simplify the medical travel  experience that ensures individuals utilizing their medical travel benefit in Costa Rica receive attentive, full-time medical, dental and travel assistance. The program is fully administered by SmartCare staff.

SmartCare Worldwide worked closely with the Costa Rican government, medical community and the  Council for the International Promotion of Costa Rica Medicine  (PROMED) to develop the infrastructure and relationships core to SmartCare’s medical tourism program. SmartCare chose  Costa Rica  because of the country’s commitment to excellence in medical tourism , now Costa Rica’s third largest industry.

During a recent interview, Huntington said, “We have built a new and extraordinary benefit program that brings something meaningful to the insurance and benefits market. Our new medical travel benefit program will provide employers of all sizes an opportunity to give back to their employees by providing a wide range of medical services that may not have been available to them previously. Perhaps this can serve as an answer to the rising costs of healthcare in the U.S.”

“We saw a tremendous opportunity for our clients—global businesses, employers and large associations,” says Principal Shelly Coonrod , “to have the unique capability of providing their employees, retirees and members a new health benefit of exciting and real value, giving them access to world-class dental and medical treatment at great savings.”

“We worked hard while building this program to develop high-functioning relationships with Costa Rica’s finest hospitals, physicians, dentists, surgeons and specialists,” Coonrod states. “We’ve solidified those relationships and structured a total, scalable system for medical travel and medical tourists. SmartCare can deliver this system turnkey to an employer and will administer the program in its entirety with minimum impact on the employer’s HR department. I feel we’ve succeeded in bringing a complete medical tourism option to the market.”

“The icing, of course, is that Costa Rica is a beautiful destination to visit. It is ecologically one of the most refreshing places on the planet–a peaceful country with solid ties to the U.S. and only a three hour flight from Houston Intercontinental Airport .”

Puducherry Tourism Minister P. Rajavelu said the government would form an expert committee to explore the possibilities of promoting medical tourism.

The Minister, who held an important meeting with Dr. Pankaj Arora, President of the American Academy for Emergency Medicine in India (AAEMI), and Dr. T.S. Ravikumar, Director, JIPMER, told The-Hindu on Monday that Puducherry had excellent potential to promote medical tourism, which was gaining momentum in some cities in South India.

There were nine medical colleges in Puducherry, which included the renowned JIPMER, the first medical educational institute in Puducherry. No other town in South India has such a large a number of medical colleges and other allied institutes. It was a blessing not only to students but also patients, including from foreign countries. Hence, it has been decided to set up a committee with line departments so as to transform Puducherry as a destination for medical tourism , he said Mr. Rajavelu said a conference would be convened soon under the chairmanship of Chief Minister N. Rangasamy to carry forward the agenda for medical tourism. With the available infrastructure and treatment facilities, Puducherry could garner global attention and become the foremost choice for patients from abroad.

Infrastructure development necessary

Since treatment was expensive in countries such as England, USA and others, there was a possibility to attract patients from European countries also. Fine tuning the infrastructure was the need of the hour. Steps would be taken to enhance infrastructure and facilities in medical college hospitals so as to fulfil the expectation of patients from abroad also.

Hospitals such as JIPMER and PIMS have been developed to the level of attracting patients from abroad. This was an indication that Puducherry could be developed as a hub of medical tourism.

However, it was important for the hospitals to get international accreditation to attract patients not only from western countries but also from neighbouring ones.
