Lien announces intention to develop medical tourism

Taipei , Taiwan :

The election office of Sean Lien (連勝文), the ruling party’s Taipei mayoral candidate, said that Lien will utilize Taipei’s medical facilities and tourist attractions to develop Taipei’s medical tourism industry.

This policy will be implemented through an integration of Taipei City’s medical resources, according to a press release published by the election office yesterday.

Tourist attractions in Taipei such as Beitou District’s hot springs and Wenshan District’s tea gardens will be featured to promote local tourism. The theme of Lien’s medical policy advocates “preventive medicine.” As such, the city government will roll out health checkup services as well as travel itineraries that aim to bring about healthy living.

This campaign will be promoted abroad in an effort to attract foreign tourists and business travelers.

Lien also intends to develop the status of city hospitals as a major window serving the elderly and other disadvantaged groups, and by doing so, hopes to enable more people to obtain access to medical resources in their communities. The announcement mentions that assisting locally available hospitals to earn trust and greater usage rates with the community’s residents would be a goal. To that end, aforementioned preventative medicine as well as home visit services will be emphasized.

A “Taipei Card” for health services would be promoted to encourage city residents’ participation in activities conducive to public health, such as riding YouBikes and attending health exams, with points that can be used for cash or credit for certain public amenities and services.

In addition, Lien said that he will try to improve both “hard” and “soft” quality medical resources in the city’s hospitals, which is expected to level up the hospitals’ services and create a better work environment.

Tax incentives for medical tourism, disabled

Kuala Lumpur  :

It is proposed that new and existing companies engaged in expansion, modernisation and refurbishment of their healthcare facilities be given exemption on income equivalent to Investment Tax Allowance of 100 per cent of qualifying capital expenditure for a period of five years.

The proposed incentive contained in the Budget 2015, is for companies that provide private healthcare facilities to at least five per cent healthcare travellers from their total number of patients. The move is made in view of Malaysia having the potential to be the region’s medical tourism hub and to further stimulate its growth.

The eligible companies must be licensed by the Health Ministry and registered with the Malaysian Healthcare Travel Council.

The qualified healthcare travellers are Malaysia My Second Home participants and their dependants, expatriates with a Malaysian work permit and their dependants, and non-Malaysians who visit and receive treatment from private healthcare facilities in Malaysia. The incentive is for applications received by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) from Jan 1, 2015 to Dec 31, 2017. — Bernama
