As of May 1, anyone wanting to visit Cuba must buy their own health insurance coverage. The Cuban government added that medical insurance policies purchased abroad must be from insurance companies recognized in Cuba. It also states that sales points will be established at points of entrance to the country for purchase from Cuban companies. Cuban nationals who are returning to the country must also have insurance coverage in place. Cubas healthcare system is known to be strong and is provided for free to Cuban citizens and at low costs to foreigners. However, the island nation has been hit hard by the recession and according to some, these new mandatory insurance requirements may be a way to boost its financial reserves.
