Stress on promoting medical tourism in India

India has made a big leap in the creation of medical facilities both in the Government and private sector and there is an urgent need to create awareness about the same to promote medical tourism, observed speakers at a two-day seminar, which concluded at Periyar University here on Saturday.

The national seminar on the topic “soil and economic dimensions of medical tourism in India: opportunities and challenges” was organised by the Department of Sociology of the university.

R. Indira, secretary, Indian Sociological Society, and former Professor and Chairperson, Department of Sociology, Mysore University, Mysore, in her inaugural address, said that excellent medical facilities and qualified medical professionals had helped in attracting lot of people from abroad for treatment to India.

She said that medical tourism was expected to bring lot of revenue to the country. The Government should ensure that the revenue generated should be spent for the benefit of the poor and downtrodden in the country, she added.

D. Selvaraju, professor, former Dean, Faculty of Arts, Annamalai University, in his key note address, said that India had a long and successful history in the field of medical treatment.

Dr. Palanivel, Dean, Periyar University, in his presidential address, underlined the importance of upgrading the medical facilities in the country and called upon special studies in this regard.

The problems confronting the health front should be addressed to in the right earnest.

C. Gobalakrishnan, seminar director and assistant professor of Sociology, Periyar University, gave details of the theme of the seminar and its relevance in the present context.

T. Karunakaran, professor, Department of Sociology, Periyar University, said that the seminar discussed different issues regarding medical tourism in the country and the practical guidelines for the same.

Participants from Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu were present in the seminar.
