Health tourism working group

Portugal.

The government has formed a working group to develop the health tourism segment in Portugal.

This tourism sector should attract visitors interested in taking advantage of mainline medical, alternative therapy and general wellbeing opportunities available in Portugal, particularly in the low season.

Health tourism has been registering a growth of 20% a year and currently represents a global net worth of €70 million, according to the office of the Ministry of Health and State Secretariat for Tourism.

The group will coordinate and monitor work between governmental organisations to define Portugal as “an internationally recognised destination for health tourism, particularly for medical tourism and even senior tourism”.

The group will be led by Algarve specialist Carlos Martins, an advisor to the Health Ministry on internationalisation and strategic projects. Other members of the group will be representatives from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Economy, the Tourism Confederation of Portugal, Health Cluster Portugal and Medical Tourism Association – Portugal.

An action plan will have to be presented by the group to health and tourism government officials  within two months
