India Medical Tourism Destination (IMTD) has expressed interest to cooperate with Tanzanian hospitals, chemists, freelance agents in order to build a thriving ecosystem that educates, facilitates and ferries medical tourists from across the world.
Briefing journalists in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday during the IMTD arrival in Tanzania organised by Federation of India Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Trident Exhibition, the High Commissioner of India Debnath Shaw said under the Indian Ministry of Health, IMTD creates bridges between clients of the medical health spectra of India and patients worldwide.
“In the 2010, this system was responsible for about 600,000 patients from over 30 countries, around the world traveling to India and spending over USD 80m in getting treated,” Shaw said.
Their countries of origin included USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Russia, the Middle East, Uganda, Tanzania, Sri Lanka and the Central Asian Republic
He said the number of Tanzanians seeking medical care was over 18,000 during the last three years.
However he said the government of Tanzania has in collaboration with a medical partner group of India tightened up to establish a multi specialty hospital in the country for treating various diseases.
For his part the Regional Director of FICCI Visek Kodikal said the purpose of the exhibition is to facilitate networking opportunities for industry professionals, academics and stakeholders and to provide a forum for organisations and institutions in India and Tanzania to collaborate and enhance the healthcare system.
